3 Senior Living Trends to watch for in 2022

After two rather unpredictable years behind us, we recently asked sales executives in senior living what they were anticipating for 2022. Everyone wants to grow census. Everyone wants to retain their staff. Everyone wants to attract the best hires.

Here are 3 trends to expect in the coming year.

1. Do more with less

Inflation hit a 30-year high of 6.2% in October of 2021 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Senior care is already feeling the pinch. It’s time to get innovative on a community level for everything from prospect inquiries to your resident’s experience to current staffers and new applicants.

One VP of Sales for a large senior living brand says, “Think appreciation, recognition and celebration. Oh, and make sure to throw in humor and laughter! We all want more of that!”

Look for inexpensive ways to deliver the “WOW” factor to your residents, after all they will be the ones dealing with rate increases first. Just giving them the love and care they deserve is exactly what they want more than anything.

2. Treat your team like you treat your residents

Pay attention to the back door. Caregivers continue to feel serious fatigue from the last two years. In fact, some of the most phenomenal healthcare workers are leaving the industry. We need them!

Find ways to recognize their work, without breaking the bank, like giving them more Paid Time Off. Some communities are now providing unlimited PTO! When team members rely on coordination between management and employees for shift coverage and completed work, it creates better communication among staff.

3. Hire people who match your core values

Experience doesn’t have to be the end all be all for hiring. One large Midwest senior living brand just hires what they call 51ers.

“They are those who believe in our mission, who love seniors and know they deserve to be cared for lovingly. I can teach them how to set dining tables, or change bed linens, or a plethora of other caregiving duties, but I can’t teach them why there is a great responsibility when it comes to caring for seniors.”

Taking a chance on applicants with a high standards, the right heart, advocates for seniors who can deliver unforgettable moments with residents and families is a great strategy moving forward into 2022.
