Are you the type of person who waits in line at midnight to see the first showing of the summer’s hottest blockbuster hit (or would, if movie theatres were still open)? Well, according to the Pew Research Center, 28 percent of you out there feel that way. On the other hand, 52 percent of people prefer to stick with their tried and true products, while 39 percent of folks prefer to wait until they hear about others’ experiences before trying something new themselves.

Makes, sense, right? After all, if you’re going to drop a huge chunk of change on a hot new smartphone, many of us want to make sure it’s worth it. That it’s reliable. Useful. In other words, a sure thing. A safe bet.

Well, guess what? That’s how a lot of businesses (and business decisions) roll, too. Because adopting a new way of doing things is risky. Scary. Much better to sit back and watch others try (and fail – or succeed) and learn from their findings. It may mean that you don’t get quite as much success as others, but hey, it’s guaranteed success – right
