Episode 45 – Attract More Prospects With A Senior Living Wellness Plan

We’ve all been there, we promise ourselves we will start a healthy lifestyle, but when push comes to shove we skip the workout and choose to watch just a few more episodes of our current Netflix binge.

Change is hard and new habits are tough to stick to.

This can be a truism of life, including when it comes to moving into a senior living facility. Residents go through a big life change by moving someplace new and it can be difficult to participate in the wellness activities being offered.

Our guest today is an expert on wellness in senior living facilities and is passionate about helping seniors live a more holistic healthy lifestyle in their communities.

Kay Van Norman is the founder and president of consulting firm, Brilliant Aging, where she tracks industry trends and integrates to implement practical wellness strategies for her client communities.

Van Norman said the average participation in physical activities in senior living communities is only about 30 percent. Oftentimes, if a resident doesn’t engage in wellness activities right away, they never will. This is startling because it is often your most engaged residents who will become the best referrals to your community. There’s the second benefit to activity engagement that Kay says many communities don’t think about.

So what is the solution for actually sticking to a health and wellness plan, in particular, in the senior living community?

Van Norman said it all has to do with communities offering a holistic wellness plan that will motivate and encourage residents to pursue holistic health as soon as they move-in.

She said people who are “pre-contemplators” or “contemplators” are not going out and seeking information on wellness in your facility, so you need to get it to them with content they will see every day. If someone has never been interested in physical activity, you help them feel the need and know that they can be successful.

The bottom line is this: families want to know that your community has systems in place to help their loved-one thrive in their new environment. If you want to increase wellness opportunities for your community, you don’t want to miss this podcast.
