This private 64-acre Continuing Care Retirement Community in south Overland Park has it all. It’s modern, it’s spacious and the residents practically run the place with dozens of clubs and classes.  This place is hopping!  They have hiking clubs and travel clubs. They offer woodworking classes and their chorale singers are impressive!  Many residents say they move here because they simply can’t find this level of activity in their private homes or neighborhoods.  These residents are all about living a fun, full active life. John Knox Village

This community was established in the Kansas City area 45 years ago and stayed progressive over the years.  They offer so many different types of homes: villas, cottages, apartments, even single-family homes – all with the benefits of maintenance-free living.  There are 70 different floor plans.  A typical neighborhood subdivision doesn’t have 70 different floor plans!

As exciting as that may sound, they understand how daunting it can be to move so they have a Moving Assistance Program to get your current home market-ready – inside and out.  They’ll help you sort through years of stuff, pack what you want and move it over. Then, they’ll help you settle in.  They’ve thought of it all!

When you’re ready to play, John Knox Village can accommodate you. There are lakes for fishing, a 9-hole golf course, a bowling alley, fitness center, even indoor and outdoor swimming pools. There is an art studio, a salon & spa, a woodworking shop and a 2,000 seat pavilion for all types of events.

The history of this not-for-profit organization, their continued evolution to stay relevant to its residents and future residents and the plethora of living styles places them on this Top 10 list!

Mission Chateau

It’s one of the newest communities in the Kansas City area and we really like that it is nestled on 18+ acres inside Prairie Village.  The location adds to the vibrance of this place.

Just two blocks from a variety of shopping, restaurants and businesses inside this bedroom community makes Mission Chateau a walkable community with maintenance-free living.  There is also plenty of space on campus to take a peaceful walk and enjoy nature. The landscape and grounds are beautifully managed.

The community’s décor is gorgeous, the floor plans are modern and the high-end finishes are really high-end!

While this isn’t technically a CCRC model, it does provide various levels of care if residents should need them down the road.  There are both Assisted Living and Memory Care areas, plus, a full complement of post-acute health care services including Home Health, Rehabilitation, and Skilled Nursing – all customized to meet your health care needs.

Kingswood Retirement Living

At this Independent Living community, you get the best of both worlds: a home the way you love it without the maintenance and upkeep that you don’t love!   All Villa floor plans include an attached garage.  They each come with a deck and some have 3-season rooms. Great layouts.  There are a variety of apartment layouts too. Most with a balcony and some with two!

As nice as the living quarters are, residents don’t want to stay inside all day with all there is to do at Kingswood Retirement Living. Their recent $35-million expansion has created a whole new community with 11 new Villas, a bistro and an open-air rooftop.  There’s a new art studio, theatre and even a stage for performances.  They plan to build 11 more new Villas for those interested in a new build.

It’s rare to find in senior living, but the majority of the staff has been around at Kingswood Retirement Living for a long time which speaks volumes about this place. With additional levels of care available it makes it easier to age in place, too.

The well-rounded variety of activities (putting green, fenced dog park, convenience store, library, aquatic center) make this worthy of this Top 10 list.

The Fountains at Greenbriar

We like The Fountains at Greenbriar for a variety of reasons. It’s one of the few places that is solely a 55+ community.  It offers enough activities to keep it interesting – wine tasting, college courses, art and music classes, and unlimited access to their mind and body fitness programs.  It offers two meals per day so you don’t have to cook at home if you don’t want to.  And, it’s more affordable than most Independent Living communities we’ve found.

This well-rounded community embraces a well-known Kansas City tradition: barbecue. For 10 years, they’ve hosted a competition each fall that is sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society!  Forty barbecue teams participate.  There’s a dessert competition too.  It all leads up to the feast for residents and guests.

Residents who, for whatever reason, need home healthcare can get it right here. Interim Healthcare provides that service at The Fountains at Greenbriar and is conveniently located in the building. They are on duty 24/7, even making house calls to residents.

This Independent Living community covers all the bases which is why it belongs on our Top 10 list.

This Independent Living location truly provides the best of both worlds with its location, modern style and stack of fun!  It is why it is on this Top 10 list!

Village Shalom

This vibrant Independent Living affinity community is expanding!  Village Shalom’s roots date back to the early 1900’s when a small group of Jewish friends gathered to discuss care for the elderly. From there it evolved through the years with a few location and name changes finally to become Village Shalom in June 2000 as a Continuing Care Retirement Community in south Johnson County Kansas.

There are 9 floor plans for The Villas, and 7 floor plans for The Apartments, plus, there’s the heart of the community called Main Street which holds first-class social space for dining, drinking, pampering and entertainment.  A fitness center, art studio, game room, pickleball court, and outdoor courtyard with fire pit make this an easy transition from home-maintenance and upkeep.  Both traditional and liberal Jewish worship services are offered here, along with Catholic and Protestant services.
