Top 10 Best Kansas City Memory Care Communities

Kansas City Memory Care Communities

Kansas City Memory Care Communities hold a special place in our hearts. Members of our SeniorVu team know first-hand the heart break of watching a loved one transition from their known selves into a world of confusion and fear.  Finding the right community for your loved one makes all the difference, and some take the extra steps to provide the best care and service possible for their memory care residents and their families.

Research and science studies continue the search for better answers, and some communities are paying more attention to those results and adapting to constantly make improvements for their community of residents.  We find it only appropriate to shine light on those we believe are paying attention to innovation and proven results in an effort to encourage more memory care communities to follow suit.

In our Top 10 Best Memory Care list, communities are recognized for unique qualities they adopted to improve the quality of life for their residents. And we hope it helps readers looking for a solid list of places should they need to begin their search for a memory care community.

Autumn Leaves

No one can argue with personalized care and Autumn Leaves of Lee’s Summit does this exceptionally well. Yes, it is family owned and operated.  Yes, their employees are all trained in memory care including those in the corporate office. That is expected of any reputable memory care community.  Autumn Leaves personalizes care to the extreme – in a good way!

It’s called biography-based life engagement programming which is based on seven dementia care core beliefs:  respect, excellence, safety, quality of life, engagement, commitment and teamwork.  It starts with each resident’s interest, history, and preferences so their day creates calm, moments of joy and promotes their cognition.  There are six elements: artistic expression, physical activity, spiritual support, community connections, continuing education, lifestyle & leisure.  And, their taste buds are important too! The culinary staff is trained specifically to recognize the needs of each individual resident.  This includes special occasions when family members of a resident are invited to participate. The lifetime achievements and success of each resident is never forgotten. They believe the disease doesn’t define a person. It’s who they are on the inside that counts.

The building is busting with natural light, wide hallways, and a secure and beautiful courtyard for residents to safely explore.  The space and a rich activity program designed to understand the resident’s negative triggers then change their environment to address those feelings helps lower anxiety, decrease frustration, and fosters their sense of purpose. That’s why Autumn Leaves is on our Top 10 List!

Heritage of Overland Park

This memory care community starts with understanding their residents which is why their team works closely with the resident’s family.  They know their loved one best! This small but mighty community provides a home environment centered around dignity, respect and love.  Their dedicated team takes the philosophy to heart, developing close personal relationships with the residents and their families.

Each resident has an individual Life Services Plan that is tailored to them based on their needs and desires.  This care plan identifies each area of support that a person may need and how those needs are met. Plus, they receive a plethora of other services and amenities to provide

encouragement, support, and to enhance their ability to live an active and meaningful life.

Here are just a few of the unique components of the Life Services Plan:

  • Mobility/Escort Assistance
  • Whirlpool Bathing
  • Nighttime Preparation
  • Coordination of Pharmacy Services
  • Emotional/Behavior Management
  • Elopement/Exit Seeking Management

Seniors often benefit from a variety of therapy services like strength, endurance and balance exercises to prevent falls, and swallowing and eating work – activities to help in their daily living. Truth is, due to insurance limits people with dementia don’t always have access to this type of therapy. Heritage of Overland Park believes so strongly about it they have partnered with a rehab provider to offer it anyway. All it takes is an order by a physician, which is billable through Medicare or private insurance. And, the Heritage team is trained on each resident’s needs to help support them during everyday life.

It’s the family-oriented culture, the various levels of support and going beyond expectations that places Heritage of Overland Park on our Top 10 list!

Comfort Care Homes

It’s hard to argue with a pioneer! Comfort Care Homes started 25 years ago in a real home.  Today their houses are still in real homes in established neighborhoods, designed for no more than 8 residents at a time. And the 6 to 1 resident-to-caregiver ratio allows for attention to detail.  Caregivers can really get to know the residents and their family.  Residents can get the personal attention they need to maintain a sense of independence, self-esteem and pride.

Residents enjoy life on their schedule. Some rise early. Some don’t. Some like a cup of joe and a piece of toast for breakfast. Some want the full meal deal. In fact, the kitchen is open 24 hours, just like it was when they lived in their own home.  While group activities are designed to include everyone, residents’ individual hobbies are encouraged and fostered.  It’s not just about staying active. It’s about enjoying each activity.

The real home approach with the low caregiver to resident ratio makes Comfort Care Homes an obvious community to include on our Top 10 list!

McCrite Plaza

McCrite Plaza at Briarcliff is a continuing care retirement community and it now offers a newly-opened specialized memory care community that can provide early-to mid-stage memory support in their independent and assisted living apartments. Memory Care services are integrated into their daily life. Frankly, it allows them to stay with a spouse or family member longer, providing both of them a level of care they may not receive at home.

Each resident is given an assessment by healthcare professionals so a care plan can be created with their unique abilities and needs in mind.  With continual review and evaluation, the professional nurses and staff can monitor the residents needs while they live with independence and dignity in their own apartments.

As a CCRC, memory care residents here have a purposefully designed memory care “neighborhood” that features a spacious outdoor garden, a four seasons sunroom, quiet space, sensory area plus an open-air kitchen with anytime dining.  Their holistic care focuses on mind, body and spirit – elements that are naturally incorporated throughout their daily lives.

McCrite is the complete package providing residents with activities, social settings, and fresh, nutritious meals that are catered to meet their individual needs, and that’s why they are on our Top 10 list!

Morningside Place – An Anthem Memory Care Community

Morningside Place understands how stress levels can rise as dementia progresses – not only for those living with the disease but for their family members who love them dearly. Many families don’t even know where to begin to find the care or the answers they need.   Morningside Place designed a community life that reduces the stress on both the residents and their family members so they can get back to enjoying each other.  Along with the early health assessment, comes discovery questions.  They want to know each resident’s unique story, personal preferences, their abilities while preserving their dignity.

They believe their person-centered approach is best for the resident and great for their family because it keeps them all connected and involved in their care.  Still, they strive to connect residents with the staff of trained professionals and volunteers in ways that are appropriate and helpful.  They do this with best-in-class staffing ratios which provides the time and space for them to be quality caregivers who support residents with kindness and patience. Their mandatory 30-minute communication meetings at care shift changes provides consistency for the residents.

This community is progressive too.  They utilize technology software called It’s Never 2 Late™. This interactive program is designed specifically for memory loss on all levels.  These have proven to be fun, provide learning, mental stimulation and even a way to communicate with loved ones.

Morningside Place loves pets and kids.  They’re a proponent of multigenerational work they call “Better Together.”  Whenever their seniors interact with young people it has proven to generate smiles and laughter.  It can even stimulate memories for many of residents!  Their work boils down to this: bringing each resident joy, laughter and peace which is why they are on our Top 10 list.

The Gardens at Barry Road

For those seeking a faith-based memory care community, The Gardens at Barry Road is a terrific option. Of course, their top priorities are safety and quality of life, which lives out daily through the hearts and hands of its professionally trained staff.  Families feel comforted by the supervision and monitoring that takes place 24 hours a day.

To help residents maintain cognitive function and language skills they’re set up with a healthy routine of consistent social interaction. Meals are enjoyed family-style. Living spaces are vibrant and welcoming, and Memory Care Companion Suites help maintain healthy connections and provide affordability too. Rooms are designed so residents can succeed while maintaining as much familiarity as possible. Small accomplishments, such as working on a memory book, baking, or even making a bed, can be highly therapeutic and encouraging.

Walk into this Memory Care community and you may find a resident petting a dog or cat, enjoying the scent of flowers in their secure garden, or perhaps singing a familiar tune. Senses of touch, smell, and rhythm remain strong as memories fade, so the team members here continually tap these senses to soothe and connect with residents. Isn’t that cool?

The icing on the cake at The Gardens at Barry Road is that they have adopted Teepa Snow’s outcome-based approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care which helps people live with brain changes in a positive way.  It’s sort of like positive parenting but for those living with memory loss.  This method of communication changes how caregivers interact with residents and values their personal connections.  The goal is to improve the quality of life for everyone — residents and their families which adds to the many reasons we believe The Gardens of Barry Road belong on this Top 10 list.

Wexford Place by Senior Star

This community has created Memory Support by sparking moments and memories through purpose. Their Destination Stations allow residents to experience familiar tasks that bring back memories. It fully recognizes each person with their unique past, knowledge and physical capabilities that remain.  A car lover gets to wash his classic car in the carport.  A mother can remember the joy of grocery shopping or ironing. An executive can again sit at their desk and work on their company. Rediscovering these acts of purpose often spark satisfaction and joy – if only for that moment.  For the fix-it guy, just having an Allen wrench in one hand with washers and a screw in the other can bring back positive energy.

Wexford Place by Senior Star has created Memory Care for Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Kansas City like no other community we’ve come across. Their use of mindful acts, music, nostalgia and purpose feeds the souls of their residents. It seems to ease their suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. They work closely with families to unravel past pleasures of their residents to provide these familiar yet lost experiences, in a safe and caring environment. Destination Stations are life-giving — and this life comes in the form of many purposeful moments strung together within a Wexford Place resident’s day.

Sure. They provide a beautiful place to live in a safe environment with a well-trained team of health professionals, however, it’s this purposeful work and the Destination Stations that set them apart and deservedly place them on this Top 10 list!

Park Meadows Senior Living

Park Meadows Memory Care is unique because of its Montessori-based care.  The same way this learning approach works when we are very young has proven to encourage growth and learning through sensory activities designed for dementia patients.  The concept is that when they complete a task it triggers a sense of accomplishment and the task can also reconnect them with a part of their past.  There are seven methods: cognitive skills, life skills, movement, sensory, music, art and socialization.  Practicing these seven methods has proven to produce comfort and calm for those with memory loss.  That’s why they say, “Where you live can change how you live.”  They are making sure the experiences at Park Meadow provide each individual with the ability to enjoy life to its fullest.

The memory care community on the Park Meadows campus is a free standing building with a circular design created to allow residents the freedom to roam. However, the continual steam of activities and their Montessori approach keeps residents fully engaged.

There’s no doubt that your loved ones abilities, interests and preferences will be encouraged and maximized at Park Meadows which is why we’ve placed them on this Top 10 list.

Bickford at Mission Springs

A loved one with memory loss is vulnerable.  Their caregivers are the key to their quality of life.  At Bickford at Mission Springs their team of caregivers not only believe in what they do, but live into this manifesto.

There is no higher calling, no greater purpose than that of a caregiver.

Somehow, we’ve come to believe that caregiving is just for some of us and not all of us. Yet at our core, we are all made to love, to connect, to extend ourselves in service of others. The question is … do we have the will to love, to do what it takes, to risk ourselves in caring, even when the burden is great?  Whatever it takes!

Bickford started as one memory care community for Mary Bickford the mother of Judie Eby and mother-in-law of Dan Eby.  While they now serve other levels of care, this is near the dear to their hearts!  Here’s what the founders wrote about that.

“Life is fragile and the effects of aging can rock us to our core.

However, aging can also awaken us to the beauty of life and our need to

express love now. With the urgency of this love, our family of caregivers is

ready to do whatever it takes to make our residents happy.”

The community appears to do all the right things for their residents to keep them safe, to love on them, and provide with the quality of care they deserve.  From everything we read and hear about Bickford, we believe them that’s why they are on our Top 10 list.
