Episode 32 – Creating a Positive UX for Seniors

UX (User Experience) is a term that Apple revived in 1993 for a group of engineers who were focused on human-centered design of interactive digital systems.   Today it’s used more broadly as a way to consider what any experience is like for a consumer whether it’s walking through a hotel lobby or banking.  It’s not a term that’s been talked about much in the senior living industry until SMASH 2020.  SeniorVu teamed up with a progressive thinker in gerontology, Benjamin Surmi with Koelsch Communities and together we presented some new ideas to the senior living industry.

To formulate our presentation, we first interviewed a UX expert outside senior living.  Chris Bernard is a UX Designer with CDK Global where he works to make the experience better for those who work in the automotive industry.  Chris hasn’t always been in UX. He’s actually trained as a storyteller and filmmaker. For about 6 years, Chris was into motion graphic design and video production until, as he puts it, he got bored so moved to interactive design.  The concept of UX was still emerging when he was hired as one of the first people to do UX work for IBM, running their digital businesses. After about 6 years there, Microsoft came calling.  They hired Chris to build a bunch of products to help make digital experiences easier for designers and developers to create.

In this episode of Off Your Rocker: A SeniorVu Podcast listen in as Benjamin Surmi along with Valissa Smith and Tim Donnelly of SeniorVu share a conversation with Chris about UX as he educates us on the value of UX work as we have a discussion on why those of us in senior living should care about it.  Parts of this interview were shared in our SMASH 2020 presentation titled The Customer Journey in a Virtual World: It Will Reshape the Way We Sell in Senior Living.  In this episode of the podcast, you will hear the conversation that nurtured the idea for the SMASH 2020 session.

A huge Thank You to Chris Bernard for letting us pick his brain and to Benjamin Surmi for collaborating with SeniorVu on this concept and certainly for the work he is doing with seniors at Koelsch Communities – truly groundbreaking.  We also thank Andy Eby, President of Bickford Senior Living for providing his experience and thoughts for our SMASH 2020 presentation.  If you haven’t heard it, listen here.
